What is CarbonPay Axis?

Axis is a groundbreaking software that allows businesses of all sizes to automatically track, analyse, report and benchmark the carbon footprint of their business activities and transactions.

Why the name Axis?

Whether you think of an axis as the invisible line running through the Earth or a coordinate plane from geometry, an axis not only holds a structure together, but helps pinpoint and connect every part of the structure that the axis is supporting. CarbonPay Axis is the sustainability support system for your entire business. This Axis revolves around connecting your business expenses, activities, supply chain, and carbon reduction goals so that climate action is second nature.

How does CarbonPay Axis work?

We are a self-reinforcing and ever-expanding ecosystem for companies to automatically measure the CO2 footprint of their entire supply chain. This information creates transparency for our users to take this data and select an entirely sustainable supply chain. From uploading data files detailing your business operations, Axis analyses, sorts, and defines every scope of your business down to a single transaction or location. With this information, you will be able to clearly compare the sustainability of your entire supply chain. Furthermore, once you understand the impact your supplier relationships have on the planet, you can search from over 250M suppliers globally to benchmark and choose the suppliers that best fit your carbon reduction targets.

What sets CarbonPay Axis apart from our competitors?

First and foremost, we have access to the largest database of suppliers on the market with over 250M data points globally. With this information, we not only calculate scope 1, 2 & 3 from activity and spend methodology, but break this information down into industry, category, and allow you to tag these transactions and activities to specific subsidiaries and locations. With this granular analysis and automated filtering, you can feel confident that the information gained on your business and supply chain is accurate and up-to-date.

How many suppliers are in your database?

We have the largest number of suppliers on the market! Over 250 million suppliers are in our database and the number is continuing to grow!

Views:
Group: this view can see each subsidiary and location under the group as well as the entire group as a whole. They are able to add team members, link locations, subsidiaries, and fleets, set targets, and so much more.
Subsidiary: this view can see their subsidiary as a whole and all of the locations that link back to that particular subsidiary; however, this view does not have access to the entire group or locations that are not a part of their subsidiary.
Location: this view can only see the data that coincides with their particular locations without seeing the subsidiary or group level information.

Access:
Full Access: like it sounds, this access can see every piece of data that has been uploaded, accessed, and analyzed.
Partial Access: this access can limit a user from viewing the full breakdown of the entire company or other locations that are not linked back to their own.
View Only: this access is most often used for a company’s carbon accountant or representative that does not need to use any of the axis features, but who may need access to certain numbers, reports, and targets.

Defining the Details

What does CO2e mean?

CO2 alone refers specifically to Carbon Dioxide, while CO2e stands for “Carbon Dioxide Equivalent.” This important distinction factors in other greenhouse gases, including CO2.

Can you define scope 1, 2, & 3?

The Greenhouse Gas Protocol defines Scope 1, 2 and 3 as follows:

Scope 1 emissions are direct emissions from owned or controlled sources.
Scope 2 emissions are indirect emissions from the generation of purchased energy.
Scope 3 emissions are all indirect emissions (not included in scope 2) that occur in the value chain of the reporting company, including both upstream and downstream
emissions.

What are upstream versus downstream versus reporting company emissions?

Upstream: Every activity and expense that goes into producing a product.
Downstream: Every activity and expense that goes into the consumption of a product.
Reporting Company: Can neither be categorised under upstream or downstream emissions but are activities that need to be calculated and accounted for.

What is carbon intensity?

Carbon intensity is the measure of CO2e per unit of activity, like generating a product. This metric works to understand how clean a business’ operations are in relation to their revenue and business activity.

What is the difference between spend and activity based calculations?

Spend analysis only accounts for the amount spent on the transaction without accounting for additional information or specifics that could alter the baseline calculation. Activity analysis enhances spend analysis by prompting users to answer additional questions that will inform the most accurate calculation possible.

How is activity analysis calculated?

We automatically filter transactions from imported files that fall under the industry or scope that requires additional information to better understand and best calculate the impact of the activity in addition to the spend.

How is spend analysis calculated?

Purely based on the amount spent for each transaction.

What is the benefit of using activity and spend analysis?

Using both allows for your business to get the most granular and accurate full-picture breakdown of your carbon footprint.

What's the difference between industry and category?

Industry acts as an overarching definition of what kind of work the company in question operates under. Category, and subcategory, specifically relate to the type of scope emission that the company in question is categorised under.
